For the curious, a smattering of what I've seen so far this week:
-new diagnosis of HIV x 3
-HELLP syndrome (this was one of the moms and babies who died. It was really atypical with completely normal blood pressures throughout her entire hospital course).
-twin vaginal delivery including breech extraction
-malaria- oh so much malaria. Our entire pediatrics ward is full of children with malaria and anemia and is like a revolving door. Every day we discharge 2 or 3, and admit the same number.
-neonatal sepsis in many flavors
-eclampsia (the other mom/baby who died this weekend. She presented seizing and never really recovered).
-septic pelvic thrombus (presumed- there's no way to do imaging so it's a diagnosis of exclusion with recurrent fevers in the postpartum setting and lack of evidence for other explanations)
-infective endocarditis (presumed)
-pyomyositis, with abscesses in a dozen different places around the body.
-complete heart block-new diagnosis of HIV x 3
-pancytopenia positive for hepatitis B
-typhoid (everyone here is presumed to have typhoid it seems)
-etc etc.
