You know when tastes take you onto Memory Lane, right back to a specific time and place? A fruit offered to me by one of the nurses yesterday took me back to Honduras 2004, when I lived in Danli for the summer and first tasted mamones. I even have a picture (non-digital; these were the days of snapping a photo and hoping it turned out, having to wait several weeks to get it developed) of me with a big bunch of this fruit because I liked them so much. They are in the lychee family and have a slightly tart flavor. You eat the white flesh and spit out the yellow seed inside. They taste just as delicious as I remember from 10 years ago!
